If you have content that you want to keep private, simply discouraging search engines from finding it won't do. For that sort of content you'll want to put it behind a login. Another common myth is that if you don't generate a sitemap for your website then it won't be indexed. Not so. I've acquired well over 200 domain names over the past few years and I can tell you when I check the logs, search engines are there almost immediately looking for content to index. It's true. Domain name registrars notify search engines a domain name has been bought and that a website should be there soon. So the search engines come sniffing. Again, the only reason to discourage search engines from indexing your is during development. This does not include major website updates. Once your site goes live you could turn on maintenance mode to roll out updates, but never discourage indexing for updates. If you go the Reading Settings you will find the last option on that page is Search Engine Visibility. If you check the box beside that option and click save you will be discouraging the indexing of your site. The reason I say discourage is because it's up to search engines to honor your request. It's true. Even though you tell them you don't want your site indexed sometimes it finds its way into the index. The only true way to block search engines is the require a login to access the site.
