Well, today is my birthday, and I thought I'd show off the gift I picked out from my dad. It's a Kenwood TK-8180 mobile transceiver. It came with an Astron SS-10 12-volt power supply as well as a KMC-35 mike and mike clip. I've been trying to get a TK-8180 for a while now, and this one seemed perfect to me. The power supply really grabbed me. I found this setup on eBay about 3-4 weeks ago and asked my dad if I could order it last week. I just got it yesterday and opened it today. There wasn't a lot of stuff written to it in the old programming file. There were two channels, and that was about it. I created a brand new file in the KPG-89D software and copied every single frequency from the programming file I use on my NX-800 units, so now the channels and functions almost perfectly match. The radio is currently running firmware version 1.16.00, which I'm guessing is a pretty old, considering the fact the software gave me a warning that said some of its features, like MDC-1200, are not on this version of firmware and that the firmware has to be updated. Not sure when I'll update it. I have to figure out how, first. Maybe the most recent firmware patches that conventional PTT Proceed tone, which absolutely sucks. It's a pretty nice little setup, and I like it a lot. It has a couple problems, however. For one, the mike cord is frayed. There is exposed wire, so that cord will have to be replaced. The other problem is that there are no fuses. I will need to get wires that have fuses on them so I can have protection when I'm operating the radio. This is going to be my portable base station. It will be perfect for weekends at my mom's or vacations. I need to get some kind of base antenna I can attach to an old microphone stand or something like that so I don't have to use the mobile antenna. After all that stuff is done, and after I get my GMRS license, it should be a pretty nice little setup.
